ytringsfrihet og kollektiv mobilisering

Et formål med utstillingen er å synliggjøre tankene og følelsene som motiverte deltagere og satte i gang en «ny» gammel dialog om rasisme og antirasisme i Norge og verden.

Demonstrasjonen vekket stor oppmerksomhet og resulterte i både støtte og kritikk. Noen ønsket og forventet en ny offentlig dialog som kunne rette nytt fokus mot minoriteters definisjonsmakt og selv-representasjon.

«Din pust, din stemme» spør : Hvilke inntrykk sitter demonstranter og bidragsyter med i dag? Hvordan ser veien videre ut for enkelte individer og for samfunnet?

Utstillingen arrangeres i samarbeid med Oslo Museum og katalogen produseres av TrAP og designer João Doria.

YOUR BREATH, YOUR VOICE

Anti-racism, definitional power and 5 June 2020

More than 15,000 protesters reportedly participated in the demonstration “We can’t breathe. Justice for George Floyd” on 5 June 2020. The Oslo-based organizations Africans Rising in Solidarity and Empowerment (ARISE) and the African Student Association, UiO (ASA) arranged the largest Norwegian demonstration of the summer at Eidsvoll Square in front of Storting.

The exhibition “Your breath, your voice” grows out of a desire to present some of the unfiltered voices behind the demonstration. One purpose of the exhibition is to make visible the thoughts and feelings that motivated participants and organizers to act collectively, restarting a “new” old dialogue about racism and anti-racism in Norway.

Free speech and Collective action

The demonstration attracted widespread attention and resulted in both support and criticism. The organizers wanted and expected a new public dialogue that could refocus on definitional power and the self-representation of minorities.

The photographs and video documentation are from The Oslo Desk. The protest posters have been collected by LEV, and oral history interviews have been collected in collaboration with Memoar.

The exhibition is arranged in collaboration with The Oslo Desk, Oslo Museum and the catalogue is produced by TrAP and designer João Doria.

Det sies at mer enn 15 000 demonstranter bidrog til demonstrasjonen «We can’t breathe» Rettferdighet for George Floyd 5. juni 2020 i Oslo. Organisasjonene Afrikans Rising in Solidarity and Empowerment (ARISE) og the African Student Association, UiO (ASA) arrangerte markeringen ved Eidsvolls plass foran Stortinget.

Utstillingen «Din pust, din stemme» vokser ut av et ønske om å presentere noen ufiltrerte stemmer bak demonstrasjonen. Utstillingen vil presentere et utvalg av protestplakater, muntlig, fotografier og muntlig historieintervju til.

Fotografiene og videodokumentasjonen er fra The Oslo Desk. Protestplakeatene er innsamlet av LEV, og muntlig historieintervju er innsamlet i samarbeid med Memoar.

Background

In the spring of 2020, there were anti-racism demonstrations across large parts of the world in response to the killing of George Floyd, an African-American man, by police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

We saw major demonstrations and a resurgence of debates about structural racism and police violence in the United States. Similar collective mobilizations for anti-racism and social injustice took place in small and large cities around the world. There were also solidarity protests and demonstrations in several Norwegian cities.
